WPPI DETROIT

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but we’ve just been to Detroit and back. Door to door I think we were gone for a little more than 24 hours. And PS: Detroit is a little bit of a further drive than I thought!

We headed to the Motor City to attend an all-day conference on Wednesday put on by WPPI – an organization for professional wedding and portrait photographers who hold conferences all over the states, and a big one in Las Vegas towards the end of February every year. I’d never been to one of their events before, so I wasn’t entirely sure exactly what to expect. In the back of my mind, I thought maybe I’d feel like I didn’t belong. That maybe I’d think that I wasn’t doing it right, or that I didn’t know enough, or that everyone else was “making it” and I wasn’t. But you know what? I think the biggest thing I took home from listening to the four speakers was that we (photographers) all do it differently. And that that’s ok. Actually that’s more than ok; I think that’s great. I didn’t always resonate with what the speakers were saying (sometimes I did. Lots of things that this girl had to say was like she was reading my mind!). But overall, being there actually gave me confidence in the path I’ve chosen and the way Dave and I do things. It made me sad to think that maybe a photographer would listen whole heartedly to someone else’s advice on what made them successful and think that if they just do the same thing, it will mean that they will be successful. I don’t think it works like that. I feel like Dave and I are successful, because we’ve defined our goals, we’ve met our goals, we’re making new ones, and we’re making the people we work with very happy bunnies. And we’re making ourselves very happy bunnies, doing what we love together.

Quite a few Ontario photographers made their way down and it was great to rep-re-SENT down there. It was awesome to meet in person a few girls I’d been following and chatting to on twitter for the past little while, like Rosita and Sandra. The best part of the whole day was probably when I tapped Krista on the shoulder to whisper something insightful and she turned around to face me with her door prize ticket scrunched up in her eye socket like a pirate and I couldn’t stop laughing. As much fun as we had, it was a whirlwind and after a long drive in the dark trying not to get lost and discussing everything we’d heard, it was so nice for Dave and I to walk into our place and be greeted by a friendly face and a whole lot of purring. No matter where we’ve been, it’s always nice to come back home and have a certain someone waiting for you…

LIST #3: GUILTIEST PLEASURES

Woke up this morning and it was still dark. And no, I did not get up super early, there was just a torrential downpour happening outside the window. I feel like I’ve been in a time warp recently and have barely had time to wrap my head around the fact that it’s September already. Like, I’m still in the mode of not wearing a jacket, going out in my non-water-friendly shoes, and thinking in the back of my mind “oh, we’ll still have a few days of indian summer yet”. But the last few days around here has confirmed it for me. It’s almost October and it’s fall people. I was cold last night without a jacket, my Toms got soaked, and I don’t think it’s going to get summery warm again for a good long while. We’ve officially entered into the stage of making warm homemade soups for dinner and sitting at the desk doing our work wrapped in a blanket with a warm drink by our side and giving in to other similar guilty pleasures. Just to name a few of my favourites…

1. Watching reruns of Seinfeld or Friends on that sitcom rerun channel on the tv, a warm bowl of chicken and apple chili on my lap. Even guiltier pleasure: watching reruns of Corner Gas. Which is a big thing to admit seeing as I completely and utterly bashed this show when it first appeared on Canadian television a few years ago. But living as ex-pats overseas for a year made us long for and appreciate a little bit of Canadiana, and Oscar Leroy single-handedly won me over.

2. Letting my cat fall asleep in my lap at my desk with my legs crossed so my feet fall asleep after a while…

3. Mom’s warm out of the oven apple crumble with cream.

4. A warm bubble bath and a good book. And a box of chocolates perched precariously on the ledge, slowly melting. Because I’m working on bringing out my inner Sybil Fawlty.

5. Caramel Apple Latte from Second Cup. (Sorry beloved Pumpkin Spiced. I think you’ve been replaced.)

6. Tearing up at new seasons of reality tv shows. The season premier of the Amazing Race last weekend? Totally sniffling through it. And I don’t even know why! Also, watched this one the other day where the CEO of a company goes undercover within his organization for a week. Didn’t even pretend not to cry. And maybe I watched Survivor too. Maybe.

7. Taking out a random travel book from the library and becoming totally immersed in it, planning out an ideal day in that part of the world. There are several cities around the world (some that I’ve been to, others that I have not) where I know pretty much exactly what I would do when I got there, and I lose myself in that daydream whenever I get itchy feet. But that’s another blog post entirely. I wish I had the time to say that I’ve done this lately.

8. Watching random videos of weddings. Like this one. And maybe getting teary-eyed.

9. Cuddling.

10. Making lists. Lists to no end.

I also love fall walks with my hubby. But I wouldn’t consider that a guilty pleasure. Here’s two I love of us on our 4th anniversary earlier this summer in Stratford.

HANNAH & DAVE’S SNEAK PEEK

Ah it’s been a great weekend…here’s a little sneak peek from the gorgeous wedding of Hannah and Dave that we shot in amongst the trees in the countryside yesterday…I think you might have to search far and wide and for a very very long time before you would come across another couple who are just so cute and as much in love as these two are. Love these two quite a bit (both the two images and the couple!). More to come soon, after the newlyweds are back from their mystery honeymoon at destination: unknown! (so fun!)

BONNIE & BRANDON’S WEDDING IN ANCASTER

I’ve got to say that I took these photos through the editing process with a huge smile on my face basically start to finish. I absolutely loved being a part of this day. Sure it was grey out. Sure it was an outdoor ceremony and it had rained the night before and that morning, making the ground take on a kind of squishy quality. But as everyone gathered in the forest to sit on long wooden benches and watch as Bonnie and Brandon tied the knot, at some points during the ceremony (between the laughter, hooting and hollering – it was a fun ceremony!) the only thing you could hear was a light pitter-patter from the rain hitting the leaves on the trees overhead and I thought it was so beautiful. I think everyone in attendance would agree.

At the beginning of the day I met up with Bonnie and her bridesmaids and as the morning progressed, we quickly ran out of kleenex as Bonnie wrote out her speech (kleenex), was given a blue embroidered handkerchief and a ring from her mom and sister to carry with her down the aisle (more kleenex), and her best friends saw her for the first time in her dress all ready to go (…even more kleenex!). The ceremony was definitely one to remember and the minister had the whole crowd cracking up with his references to inappropriate rap music and a hilarious story he told of an old married couple lying in bed together, which ended with the husband reaching over and putting the cat on his wife’s head as she slept. Bonnie took one look at Brandon, then said to the crowd, he would so do that (Brandon did not put up any protest). He also talked about how love is always a choice, not an emotion, something that has stuck with me ever since.

The more I go through life the more I’m convinced that you can find out a lot about people by the company in which they choose to surround themselves. Bonnie and Brandon are wonderful, wonderful people. We knew that after meeting them and hanging out at their engagement session. Being there at the wedding with their families and friends did nothing but confirm that fact to us. They have surrounded themselves with wonderful, wonderful people, and we felt lucky to be included and to witness such a tight and caring family come together to celebrate a marriage; the marriage of their son and their daughter; their sister, brother, friend. B&B, thank you so much for having us be a part of your day! We loved every minute and loved being able to capture it for you. The love you have for your family and friends is truly inspiring to those like us who have the privilege of witnessing it. And remember, if anything ever tries to creep its way into your marriage to try and pry you two apart, lean on the wise wise words of that famous rap artist and just “smack that”!

Hope you enjoy the photos of Bonnie and Brandon’s beautiful day…

MONACA & DENNIS’ WEDDING IN NIAGARA FALLS

It’s all in the way he looks at her. Dave told me about something that happened while he was photographing the guys before the ceremony. He was taking a few family photos, and afterwards he leaned over to Dennis and jokingly said to him something to the effect of “you know, I don’t remember it being this difficult to coax a smile out of you at your engagement shoot!” Dennis laughed, maybe he said he’d try harder, the moment passed, I’m sure the two of them completely forgot about it, and they moved on with the day. Later, as Dave’s telling me about this random passing moment, he tells me that he didn’t forget about the comment and that only later did he realized what the difference was. He realized it the moment Monaca stepped out into the aisle for the first time and walked up to Dennis waiting for her. Continued to realize it as we took photos of the newlyweds after the ceremony. It was that before, at the house before the ceremony, Monaca wasn’t there. It’s all in the way he looks at her – his absolute love for her is just written all over his face. As soon as she walks into the room, he just lights up. And it’s hard to get the smile to leave his face.

We had the pleasure of photographing Monaca and Dennis’ wedding over in Niagara Falls on a gorgeous sunny Friday a few weeks back. It was quite a warm day, but we were able to find some relief after the ceremony shooting in the shade of a gorgeous old estate where the couple had originally dreamed of being married. I’m so glad we were still able to incorporate it into their day! Monaca is a girl after my own heart and wore adorable and comfy white flats and we were surrounded by gorgeousness all day with the help of Melissa from Bella’s Floral Boutique whom I’ve worked with before and who provided the stunning bouquets and floral arrangements. She always does such amazing work. Monaca and Dennis had themselves and their fun wedding party driven around in style in a huge limo bus and enjoyed catching up with family and friends well into the night at their reception.

Monaca and Dennis, we have just loved getting to know you both. Your love for each other is so sincere; and what can I say, I love that. Thank you so much for having us there at your wedding – you both looked gorgeous and we hope you absolutely loved the day. Something about the way Dennis looks at you gives me the feeling that you guys are completely made for each other and that even when you’re old and grey, his face will still light up every time you walk into the room.

Hope you enjoy these few frames of Monaca and Dennis on their wedding day…
