TERRA & ANDREW

It was a complete surprise. She’d just run into the house after work. He was at the field where they sometimes took their dog Dixon for walks. It was February. Cold, dreary. He told her to grab her boots and come join them. A random evening stroll with the dog. And out came the ring. Terra was completely surprised. Said that it was perfect. They look at each other as they tell us the story of their engagement one sunny summer evening last week, smile at each other, and she tells us “anything else and I would’ve known right away.” Anything else, and she would have know something was up. He laughs and accepts the fact. But proposing to Terra on an ordinary day, out with their dog just living life…it was just right for them. We’re sitting in this gorgeous field and I try to imagine the day back when there would’ve been snow on the ground. “So where did it happen exactly?” I asked. Andrew points. “Just right over there.”

Originally we had planned to meet up with Terra and Andrew for their engagement shoot at a very very very well known spot in their neighbourhood where absolutely everybody and their mother goes for pictures. I’m sure it would have been gorgeous. I’d never actually shot there before, so I suppose I was kind of looking forward to it, but in the back of my mind knowing it’s been done so many times before…well, let’s just say that I was super excited when our original date was – get this – not rained out, but “heat advisory-ed” out (because who wants to take photos when you’re working up a sweat just from breathing?) – and Terra asked if we could instead move the location to the place where they got engaged. I love shooting in places that are significant to the couple…love love love. So of course yes, that’s where we did them. It is such a gorgeous spot and I loved every second – fields, lakes and streams, wildflowers, big skies, the warm glow of the sun setting. Ahh.

Terra and Andrew were referred to me by another one of our amazing couples, which I love – when people you love tell their friends to hire you too, well, I pretty much already knew before even meeting them that Terra and Andrew were going to be great people just by association. And get this, they really are made for each other – Andrew builds things (he’s in construction) and Terra designs the insides (she’s an interior designer). Ok, it doesn’t quite work out like that as Terra does homes and Andrew works mainly outside of the residential sphere, but you get the idea – they just completely complement each other and that’s why they work so well together. Terra is also just starting up her own interior design business, which is so exciting! It was so nice to talk a bit of business with her and even laugh together about some of the stresses of working from home – like how we both sometimes just need to get out so we’ll just go to the mall or a coffee shop and just sit and listen to the noise of other people around us. If you work from home, it is seriously such a good thing to do every so often. And I know it must sound pretty crazy, but trust me. Terra, Andrew, we loved our time with you guys. I think the shots we got of you are just so you, and I hope you’ll think so too!

Enjoy these frames we took of Terra, Andrew, and the lovely lovely golden sunset!

DENISE & JON

Seeing someone you grew up with next to the guy she’s going to marry, well, it just never gets old. Seeing the joy in her face when she looks up at him and thinking back on the time when we both wondered if he would be the one, or maybe him over there, or that guy over there…ah, it’s just a good feeling to see it all come together. It’s one of the things I love most about doing this job – the opportunity it gives me to reconnect with old friends and see where life has taken us.

Denise and I went to the same high school and it’s been so great to be able to get back in touch and get caught up with what we’ve been up to, where we’ve been, and who we’ve fallen in love with. For Denise, that person is a guy by the name of Jon, and seeing the two of them together, I know that they’re the perfect fit for each other. They actually have quite a cool story about how they met – a few thousand kilometers away in a little country called Japan! They both landed on the exact same day a few years back – Denise coming from Canada, Jon from the States – and they didn’t know it at the time, but eventually they’d meet and the rest, as they say, would be history. I love that they decided to incorporate their story into their engagement shoot by having us all meet up in a tiny but cute Japanese style garden close by to where Denise and I grew up – but had neither set foot in before! It turned out to be the perfect spot and although the skies were grey, it meant we pretty much had the place to ourselves and could just shoot away and have a blast just chatting and joking around. These two are such genuinely nice people. You know the kind I mean. The kind of people who when you’re talking, they look you in the eye; they listen and smile and nod their heads and are just so present and interested in what you’re saying. They laugh wholeheartedly; they give all of themselves and wear their hearts on their sleeves. They’re the kind of people who make you feel just plain good inside when you’re around them. Needless to say, we loved our time with these guys.

Denise and Jon have been doing the long distance thing for a while now…Denise lives here, and Jon lives in Chicago, so we had quite the time nailing down a time to do these photos! Literally right after we finished up in the park they were both off to the airport (again) – but this time it was a happy occasion – they both got on a plane and went for a little mini-vacation together to Chicago for a few days, where Denise will be joining Jon permanently once they tie the knot. After so long apart, I can’t wait for them to be able to finally move in together! Oh and it will also be super to have a spare room should we ever find ourselves in Chi-town! Denise, Jon, we had such a great time with you both. Thanks for embracing all our suggestions and we hope you’re as happy as we are with the final results! Oh and we are so crashing your place in Chicago sometime in the very near future, you’ve been warned! Denise was a bridesmaid at a wedding I shot earlier this year for another high school friend of ours, and I can’t wait to be all reunited again at their October wedding!

But now, hope you enjoy a few of Denise and Jon’s images!

SNAPSHOTS (#6): Where your thoughts take you

I don’t know that I have a lot to say tonight. I’ve had a great week full of a LOT of work – but when you love work, long hours are actually fun in a bizarre kind of way. Today’s mission was to deliver wedding images to a beaming bride and catch up for a bit; grab a bite to eat with a good looking guy (that would be my husband!); scope out a location for a wedding next weekend and envision what we’ll be able to do with the space; grab a coffee and have a wander through Chapters; have my parents over for an impromptu visit on their way through town with a lovely bunch of flowers and some huge tomatoes we used for dinner (and watched my dad use a Mac for the first time!); edit a few photos, then have a loooong chat with one of my besties on the phone. And now I’m writing up a little blog post. Ahh. It’s been a day that’s left me with a smile on my face.

I did want to share this quote that I came upon this week that’s kind of stuck with me. It goes “You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.”

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. About how we ourselves – our mood, our attitudes, our interactions with others – affect our own destinies in a cyclical kind of way and all that kind of really deep big picture kind of stuff. Thinking about my own journey of leaving something I didn’t love behind to pursue something I’m crazy about, love doing, love learning more about, and think I’m getting better at all the time. I’ve been thinking about all the places we can go and the things we can do. But how in the end, the destination we arrive at is the place our soul has traveled to.

Anyway, I know this is kind of random. And maybe a bit deep for a Sunday night. But a little bit of random never hurt anyone. And here’s a little bit more of random for you: the images below we shot of each other during our time in the Dominican a couple of weeks ago. Hence the palm trees, gorgeous light, slightly sweaty faces, frizzy hair, etc. etc. Things were looking pretty tropical around here lately, so I just thought I’d add a few more into the mix. Because you can never go wrong with palm trees.

Here’s to happy thoughts and a great week ahead!

HEATHER TRASHES THE DRESS

We both looked at each other, willing the other person to raise their hand and knock on the door. Something about knocking on someone’s door at 6:30 in the morning just felt…wrong. Especially when that door was draped in a sign that said the words just married. It was the day after Heather and Dan’s wedding (click here to see the photos from their wedding day)…no wait, scratch that…it was a few hours after Heather and Dan’s wedding had ended the night before, and here we were, strolling down to the beach under the rising sun with the newlyweds, all four of us in what can only be described as a severe state of comatose. It seemed totally do-able the night before, the four of us screaming across the dance floor at each other with big smiles on our faces setting up our shoot for the next morning when the beach would be quiet and the sky would be pretty. But you know what? Once everyone woke up a bit, it was fun. We always have fun with these guys, so that shouldn’t have come as a surprise. But still, I kept promising everyone – Dave and myself included – that the early morning wake up would be worth it. I hope it was.

Here are a few shots from our Trash the Dress shoot with Heather and Dan in the Dominican. If you’re wondering what a “Trash the Dress shoot” is, well, it’s very similar to the type of shots we’d do with a bride and groom on their wedding day. Except we do things like roll around in the sand and jump in an ocean as well. Heather will be wearing her actual wedding dress again for their reception that is being held in Canada later this month, so she came prepared and brought along another white dress just to do the shoot in. Another white dress that she looked stunning in, and didn’t mind getting dirty as she’d already dropped melty cheese on it (it was the cheese fries, those glorious glorious cheese fries). And can I just say how much fun we had?? Shooting in the ocean has got to be one of the most fun things, ever.

Enjoy, and thanks to everyone involved!
