PHOTOS OF US BY EWAN

I sat staring at my calendar, looking at weekend after weekend booked with wonderful weddings to photograph, and the names of amazing couples who’d hired us to be there documenting their big day. A huge smile on my face. Feeling so lucky to be doing something I love. At the same time the nagging fears kept creeping up: can I do this/how will I cope/am I good enough/what if, what if, what if…And so I went into my email account, clicked “compose mail” and knew this was it. If I wrote this email, I’d need to be prepared to take the next step. I’d need to be prepared to be challenged and to enter into the next chapter of our business. I took a deep breath and wrote to Brianna and Ewan.

We met up with this amazing photography duo towards the end of May for a one day, one-on-one mentor session in their beautiful London studio and home of the Last Forty Percent Photography. We sat all day in their lovely place and chatted about anything and everything photo related – making photos, running a business, finding time for each other in the midst of it all, and everything in between. What drew us most to them was that they were a husband and a wife making a photography business work. Plus they take insanely gorgeous images and are super funny, honest, down-to-earth and open with sharing what they know. And our mentor session with them came at exactly the right time for us. I’d say the biggest thing we walked away from our time with these two was a sense of confidence. And that I think is truly the greatest gift anyone can give you.

At the end of our day we headed out into the late afternoon sun and Ewan snapped some photos of us…it was seriously so fun to be photographed by someone we admire so much and we are beyond thrilled with the shots he got of us! It’s also good for us to be in front of the camera every once in a while to see what we put our couples through, haha. Brianna’s just written a lovely post about us over on their blog, so you really must head on over to see our full session, but here are just a few of our favourites to give you a taste – we love them so so much! Brianna, Ewan, you guys are ACE! We’ve told you time and time again how deeply impacted we were and still are by our time with you, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything, absolutely everything.

So it sounds weird to say, but now, for once, enjoy some images of yours truly and my good looking guy, and click here to go to the LFP blog to see the rest! These photos make me happy. So so happy.

DEANNA & CRAIG

This couple holds a pretty special place in my heart. I can remember first going out to meet them on a cold yucky night at the end of 2009. They were two people that I just fell in love with from the moment we met. This was fairly early on in my business and I can remember being all like I hope they book me because I already love them…They are the kind of people who talk with smiles on their faces. Their eyes seem to always have a sparkle about them. They look at each other when the other person is talking, and you can tell they’re really listening to what they’re saying. And they are just so so welcoming, it’s so hard not to like them right from the get go. I remember Deanna was in her winter coat at our first meet up and I could barely even notice her growing baby bump! Part way through our meeting I ducked out to the washroom and when I came back they put their hearts on their sleeves and told me “we talked it over and pretty much, we love you.” Deanna, Craig…the feeling is mutual, like 110%! Since that first meeting I feel like we’ve been through a lot, the three of us! We joke about how I’m always there to document the important milestones in their lives…like if anything important happens, Jenn will just randomly pop out from behind the door (uh, creepy! Don’t worry, I don’t actually follow these people around with my camera!) Deanna let me take some shots of her and her baby bump right towards the end of her pregnancy (view post here), and then when their beautiful baby Carson came along, I was there to grab some shots of the little cutie in their Waterloo home earlier this year (view post here). Meeting up for their engagement shoot felt like taking a walk through the park with old friends, seriously. It felt like it had been so long that we had to spend a few minutes catching up before I even picked up my camera!

When they suggested we do the shoot at Waterloo Park my heart did a little leap for joy. The place holds another special little place in my heart, as it was the park Dave and I used to walk through when we had first started dating almost eight years ago. It was also the place when we moved back to Waterloo in 2008 that Dave would take me when I was sad about not having a job and I’d sit and play with my camera and photograph the ducks. On a personal level, it was neat to be back there; all the memories of who I was and where I’ve come from came flooding back, and it made me feel super grateful to be here, where I am now, shooting one of my favourite couples, my hubby alongside me, running my own business and loving every second.

Deanna, Craig; I feel so lucky to have met you and to have documented so many of these important moments in your life together. You two make the perfect pair and your wedding will be the ultimate celebration – I cannot wait to see you two become husband and wife! I hope you love your photos and I even threw a few in there of Craig going all “Sears-portrait-studio” on me (it’s been our joke since day one – Craig’s got an unending number of way cheesy poses up his sleeve that he pulls out at random opportunities and sends Deanna laughing out loud and rolling her eyes…I love it!).

So without any further gushing, please enjoy these frames from Deanna & Craig’s stroll around the park…

SARAH & TREVOR’S SNEAK PEEK

Remember the time it rained on Sarah & Trevor’s wedding day? Oh, and remember the time they were upgraded to the Presidential Suite? What a great day we had with this couple, their wedding party, family and friends this past Saturday. Can’t wait to share more of this beautiful couple, but for now here’s a sneak peek of Mr. President himself and his newly minted First Lady enjoying their digs…

SNAPSHOTS (#3): My grandparents are cooler than your grandparents

My grandparents have always lived in England, and since about the age of five, me and my family have always lived in Canada. Well, except for the year Dave and I lived in the UK in ’07/’08. But you know what I mean. It makes the times we do get to see them extra special. They were just over here visiting this past month and flew back home to old blighty last week. I can’t believe it went so fast and I miss them already. We’ve already made them promise to come back and visit this fall. Here are three reasons why visits with my grandparents rock:

Reason #1: I think I was around 14 years old at the time. We had one of those minivans that were all the rage in the mid-1990s and all of us – my parents, my brother, my grandparents, and me – squeezed in and made the drive down to Florida over Christmas break. And what does one do in Florida? One goes to Disneyworld, of course. Now, you’ve got to understand that my family did not often frequent theme parks, carnivals, amusement parks, or anything that had any type of rides, without lots of other kids with whom we could go on these rides with. My parents seriously hate rollercoasters. So we’re at Disney, a place full of rollercoasters and swirly rides to make you sick to your stomach, and we come across this ride that seemed to start at the top of (what seemed to be at the time) a very large mountain, and very quickly made its way down. Who offers to go on said ride with us? That’s right, my grandparents, both in their sixties at the time. At fourteen years old, I was seriously concerned for their health. We rode down the mountain and the whole time all I could hear was my brother laughing behind me as my grandma made all kinds of eeks and shrieks as we rose and fell. My grandfather who sat next to me didn’t make a sound, but he was clutching on pretty tightly. We got off at the end and had to pry their fingers off the lap bars (only kidding. They made it off in one piece and walked back to where my parents were waiting without too much knee shaking or eye twitching). I remember feeling a serious sense of “my grandparents are way cooler than your grandparents” that day.

Reason #2: Ever since I can remember, my grandfather would ask me if he could come to school with me. Even when I was in kindergarten and our classroom used those miniature sized plastic chairs – the thought of his six-foot-four frame trying to sit at a desk would send me in a fit of giggles every time. As I grew up and progressed through school, still the same joke would come up and he’d ask me if any seats had opened up in my classroom. And he never did make it to my classroom – that was until my last year in high school, the spring before I graduated. I was doing a project on a hot issue in sport, and I chose football fanaticism/hooliganism in the UK. And I got to tell my grandfather that a spare desk had finally opened up in my classroom and invited him along to listen to my presentation and even add in a few words of his own experiences. Yet another moment where I was immensely proud to have the grandparents I do (I also rocked that school project, by the way!).

Reason #3: I mentioned that Dave and I spent a little bit of time living in the UK recently. When we first arrived, we planned to spend some time where we were originally planning on living and working, before spending some time traveling around mainland Europe. It’s a bit of a long story, but I will say that we were sat on the beach the day after we arrived to our town, staring out into the ocean, and I called my grandparents and asked if we could come visit them for a few days. We hopped on a train and made an unplanned stop for a few days with them up north. We poured out our hearts about our awful experience. About how we didn’t want to spend our year living there. Wondering if we’d made a mistake. We’ll never forget those few days and how they took us in and calmed our worries. About when a call came for a position in Birmingham instead and they encouraged us to go ahead with our dream. And how nice it felt to know that they were only a short train ride away when my whole life they’d been across an ocean. They are pretty awesome grandparents and I love every second we get to spend with them. We currently accepting offers of all expenses paid flights to England…anyone?

Ok, I lied. Below are reasons #4 and #5…(and I love my brother too…)

THE BAAN FAMILY

A couple of weekends ago we made the drive out to the farm to photograph Dave’s sister and her extended family. After we shot the formal portraits, we just followed the kids around with our cameras and captured a lazy Sunday afternoon at the grandparents’ farm, telling stories with the family and watching the kids run all over the place. And if that wasn’t fun enough, as things were wrapping up before supper, out came a box full of meowing six week old kittens. The kids were excited…but not nearly as excited as I was! Erin’s niece was just enthralled with the orange one. I loved following her around as she carried the kitten everywhere with a huge smile on her face. I even got a bit choked up as I was snapping away…as I was taking these shots of her, it was as though I was seeing myself at the same age, carrying around our family’s new little orange kitten.

It was such a great afternoon. We always love going up to visit Erin and her family, but so rarely do we make it up there that every time is so super special. Erin, Jason, and the rest of the “Baan clan”, thank you so much for having us capture a little slice of your afternoon together as a family. We had a ball. Most of all I think I love the last image in this series. To me it reminds me that it all began because two people fell in love.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy these few frames of what have got to be the cutest kids in the whole world. Not that I’m biased or anything…
